What is BYU Learning Suite?
Created here at BYU, Learning Suite is a learning management system that provides essential functions similar to commercial or open-source systems such as BlackBoard, Moodle, etc. BYU Learning Suite allows you to create courses to share course content, engage in discussion, grade student assignments, provide students with feedback, track student performance, post announcements, administer quizzes and exams, and more. You can access Learning Suite at learningsuite.byu.edu or find a link to it through the MyBYU link search (learning suite). For help and more information, visit lsinfo.byu.edu.
Who can use BYU Learning Suite?
The intended users of BYU Learning Suite are BYU students and faculty. Their enrollment information is automatically pulled in from AIM. However, anyone with a BYU Net ID can be added to a course as a guest or to a community.
Can I transfer course materials on Blackboard to BYU Learning Suite?
Yes, Blackboard courses can be transferred to Learning Suite with the help of the Technology Support Center (801-422-4000 or it@byu.edu).
Which browsers are usable/supported?
Learning Suite works equally well in the latest versions of Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, and Safari. Using these browsers will minimize any bugs or issues with Learning Suite. In order for Learning Suite to function effectively with Safari, however, you must enable cookies (located under Preferences and then Privacy). Internet Explorer is the only browser not recommended, as it may cause Learning Suite to run slowly and is prone to many errors. Learning Suite is compatible with the currently released version and the prior major version of any of the browsers listed above.
Is there a charge to me or my department for using Learning Suite?
No, BYU Learning Suite is free of charge.
May my department customize Learning Suite?
The BYU Learning Suite provides uniform features and design for all users. However, the Center for Teaching and Learning and the Office of Information Technology welcomes suggestions about the Learning Suite's features and design.
Whom should I contact for assistance?
At the present time, contact:
- OIT: The Technology Support Center (801-422-4000 or it@byu.edu) will handle all questions and concerns with Learning Suite.
- CTL (801-422-8180): Learning Outcomes, Mid-Course Evaluation, future releases
What training is available?
Training materials include a quick-start guide in PDF format for Syllabus Builder and Digital Dialog and an online tutorial (for Syllabus and Dialog). There are Learning Suite Instructor and Student Help Sites with valuable information (lsinfo.byu.edu). Also, on almost every page in Learning Suite, there are question mark help buttons that may be of assistance.
Are there any scheduled BYU Learning Suite outages?
Scheduled outages may occur for updates or maintenance and are typically scheduled when Learning Suite receives the least traffic. Students and instructors will be warned of these occurrences in advance through system announcements that appear on the right side of the screen after logging in to Learning Suite. Additionally, OIT conducts bi-yearly updates in which all servers will be taken down. Learning Suite users will also be warned of these in advance.
Will BYU Faculty be able to continue developing their own course resources if they want? (such as Canvas, Moodle, or individual web pages)
Yes. Although we encourage the use of BYU Learning Suite to facilitate student learning and integrate various University resources, BYU faculty may use their own course resources if they elect to do so.
Does BYU Learning Suite support mobile and smartphone devices?
Yes.
Will Syllabus Builder and My Courses support LaTeX?
Yes, see KB0025830 for instructions on how to incorporate LaTeX symbols.
Will there be any technical issues with the Learning Suite?
Every software program faces technical challenges, and an undertaking with the scope of the BYU Learning Suite is no exception. However, extensive testing is done prior to release to ensure the software functions as flawlessly as possible.
Can I create a survey for my students to take?
Yes, this may be done by creating an "Ungraded" or "Extra Credit" exam. However, there is no stand-alone feature for surveys. You may wish to contact your CSR about using Qualtrics as an alternative.
Is total views for students refer to the number of views for the particular course or for Learning Suite in general?
The total views next to a student's name under the Users tab refers to the number of views for that particular course, not Learning Suite in general.
